We have 10 hives at our orphanage in Baja Mexico
We’re located near Milwaukee, Wis. These are 12 frame Layen’s hives. They also happen to hold 20 double deep Langstroth frames (stacked together), They are designed to be shipped (they are adapted insulated shipping cartons). We are pricing them at $250 plus shipping – frames are included. We recommend that the exterior be painted with outdoor latex to protect from UV sunshine.

I am a starting beekeeper just south of Charlotte NC USA and I have built 10 Layens swarm boxes and will be using Layens insulated hives with 1.5 inches or 38mm Polyisocyanurate Board Insulation on sides and bottom and 3 inch or 76 mm Polyisocyanurate Board Insulation on the top based on Derek Mitchell’s statement that 75% of the heat loss in on the top. My question has to do with Derek Mitchell’s statements about temperature and relative humidity zones in a natural hive found in trees and that makes we wonder if the an even deeper frame than the Layens frame would be able to better provide spacing for the temperature humidity zones that would foster honey drying and brood humidity as a varroa mitigation process?
